The Durham home rink at South Shields IBC held its nerve to defeat Cumbria in a tense extra end play-off after the scores were tied after 21 ends.

National Champion Durham starts its defence of the trophy it won so magnificently at Nottingham IBC last season with an away tie with near neighbours Northumberland. In choosing the team for this match the Selectors have stayed loyal to the squad who performed so well when winning the Trophy with the exception of two new faces, Clive Black, Hartlepool and Stephen Harvey, Stanley.

Durham won this first match in the mini-league part of the Competition. One of the four teams, Durham, lancs, Yorks and Cumbria which make up the 'Northern League' will go forward after the completion of the round robin series to the Semi- Finals.
